Women of All Ages Like Me: Karan Singh Grover

Women of all ages like me: Karan Singh Grover

Karan Singh Grover
Tellychakkar.com had earlier reported about the upcoming sequence of the doll factory in Zee TV’s Qubool Hai (4 Lions Films) which will unravel multiple aspects about what had happened in the past thereby bringing about a new twist to the show.
At a recent press conference of the show, Karan Singh Grover told us about how the twist will bring about a new dimension in the serial. He also spoke about his highly popular character Asad, his ardent fan following, his dear wife Jennifer (Winget) and his aspirations in life. Excerpts:
The channel has called a press conference with reference to the twist. It must be of utmost importance to the show. Please comment.
Indeed, the twist will have quite an impact. Rashid had left our family to get married to someone else. He is far richer than what he used to be when he was with us. Now they are coming to a point where many things will be explained thereby revealing the stories of all that has happened till yet. For instance, we will get to know as to why Rashid was being blackmailed to stay with a different family. The audience will know that the fire in the factory led to the development of several events. This episode will reveal the gone by stories of all that has happened.
Qubool Hai is raking in very good TRPs…
I have never gone beyond a TRP of 1.9 in my previous shows. So, when Qubool Hai started off with 3, I thought ‘wow’. We have reached 3.9 too and are now aiming for a 5.5. We hope that our show will have a successful three to four year run.
How did you slip into a Muslim character in Qubool Hai? Isn’t it a very different lifestyle from that of yours?
(pauses) I have finished my schooling and education in Saudi Arabia, a Muslim country that had a mix of many cultures. It is true that the Muslim lifestyle is very different from that of mine. However, it isn’t new to me as I am acquainted with that kind of lifestyle though I don’t live it. I didn’t find it difficult to get into the Muslim part of the character but the fact that it was a serious role was surely a challenge to me. It is also a multi-layered character as Asad has gone through a lot of pain and misery. To portray that with conviction throughout the show isn’t a piece of cake.
Now Asad hates his dad. Will he start liking him after his past is revealed?
There will be an explanation but that won’t result in him developing a soft corner for his dad at all. Asad will never like him. He however won’t hate his dad even more. The hatred or the pain however won’t lessen because of it. The cause of his anger is that his dad has not been with them for the last 17 years and that he has never told them as to why he wasn’t there.
How far can you relate to Asad, the character you play in this show?
I was a rapist in Kasauti Zindagii Kay and even tried to kill my mother-in-law. How could I ever relate to a character like that? I surely relate far more to Asad who isn’t doing anything illegal at the moment. He is however a little too stuck up which is quite unlike me but I value his principles. Unlike Asad, I smile a lot in real life. After all he is always in such serious situations that he can’t really break into a smile.
What advice would you give to Asad?
I would advice Asad to have a drink and just chill. I’d assure him that if he has a couple of drinks then everything will be fine.
What do you like about Asad?
I like the fact that Asad wears good clothes. He has a very successful business and is very loving towards his family.
Will the show ever see you smiling?
(smiles) I will not be smiling at all in the show.
Is the seriousness of the role growing into you?
This role is disassociating me with reality in a big way. As it is that the character I play is of a serious kind. But so much has the character grown in me, that even when I get back at home, I am the same for the next 30 minutes. My wife has also accepted that. Becoming like Asad isn’t a bad thing though; he is what he is because a lot of serious stuff happened with him in the past.
The brotherly bond of Asad and Ayaan is very endearing…
Asad and Ayaan are very close because when their father Rashid left them, Ayaan was brought up by Asad for a very long time. Asad’s mother didn’t want to take care of him as he was somebody else’s son. Even in childhood, Asad was given the responsibilities of an adult. It is because of this that their bonding is unbreakable.
You are the hunk of Indian television. Has the success of Qubool Hai added to your popularity?
Now, women of all ages like me.
You have an awesome youth fan following and even have the support of the Karan Protection Squad which will promptly jump to your defense at every given opportunity…
I am extremely grateful to Qubool Hai which has further improved my youth fan following. The Karan Protection Squad (KPS) is a very sweet group- if you say anything bad about me they will bash you online.
Which TV shows do you watch?
I regularly watch Qubool Hai and also tune into foreign channels. I used to watchFriends a lot and also liked The Big Bang Theory. There is a new show coming up titled Anger Management which I also intend to watch. I will also be watching my wife’s show Saraswatichandra regularly for sure. Other than that, I don’t watch TV shows. I am very conceited, shallow and self-centered, you see (giggles).
Which film director would you like to work with?
I would like to work with Martin Scorsese. Actually I’d like to work with anybody who is making a good film. There are so many new directors who are coming on the scene. I can’t name certain directors but there are many whom I would like to work with.
Whose fan are you?
I am a huge of Amitabh Bachchan and have seen most of his works. I know many of his dialogues by heart too.
What would you tell Big B if you ever met him?
If I ever get an opportunity to meet him, I would tell him, “I love you. Thank you for inspiring me from childhood. I have seen most of your movies.” I am yet to meet him though. When we were shooting for one of the channel promos in Film City, he was on the other set and since it was the last day of KBC, I didn’t feel like disturbing him. I could have easily gone and met him but I chickened out.
What is your greatest strength as an actor?
I have a lot of conviction in whatever I do. I try to actually feel what the character is going through. I feel that if I don’t get into that feeling, the audience won’t feel the real impact of the role.
Please mention one area in which you would like to improve as an actor.
I am not good at singing Hindi songs but if I could do that, I’d be a better actor.
What is the attitude with which you walk in life?
Leave me alone please.
What kind of roles would you never do?
I don’t think about the roles that I don’t want to do. Instead I ponder on the roles I want to do.
Your dream role is…
My dream role is Amitabh Bachchan’s role from Sharabi.
What is your aspiration in life?
I want to buy a yacht and sail and do just one film a year.
You mean you will leave TV?
If I am sailing, I can’t do a daily soap. It will be very difficult for me to reach to the set in that case (laughs).
Who is the lucky lady you would like to sail with?
Of course, I would sail with my wife Jennifer. My company is already decided, I just need the yacht.
You and your wife Jennifer have very hectic schedules and I guess nowadays
you don’t get to spend much time together.
You are correct. I haven’t seen her for the last six days. Even on the Valentine’s
Day, I didn’t get to meet her. Since I hardly get any time to meet her, I mail her instead because by the time I come back home, she is sleeping. She leaves home in the morning whereas I leave for work in the afternoon.
Don’t you do romantic things for her or give her surprises at all?
(chuckles) Well, I do buy her flowers sometimes but don’t give her surprises. Nor do
I like surprises myself. In fact I don’t know how to react when someone surprises me.

Karan Singh Grover – The actor and the character Asad Ahmed Khan in Qubool Hai!

Karan Singh Grover – The actor and the character Asad Ahmed Khan in Qubool Hai!

The Hot Molten Lava!
The Hot Molten Lava!
Asad Ahmed Khan is a man who is pained. He has been wronged. His childhood was shrouded with a father who left his mother pregnant and then one fine day he brought a child and said this is your brother, Aayan. He, at least, found some solace in this. A brother whom he mothered. However love is something he shies away from. Not because he does not want love but because he feels he is a chip off the old block and would leave the very person he loves at some stage in his life. So, prevention according to him is better than cure. But in Urdu there is a phrase, “Muddai lakh burr chahe toh kya hota hai, wahi hota hai jo munzure khuda hota hai,” which means “Can someone steal one’s fate?” And this even Asad Ahmed Khan cannot do for himself. Change his fate.
Karan Singh Grover essays the role of Asad Ahmed Khan, the man with angst and silence his valor. Karan Singh Grover takes his character to the level where Asad’s obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) of cleanliness is second nature. There was a scene where he cringes as Zoya pours two spoons of coffee on the table to rile him up. But anger ultimately gets the better of him and he upturns the mug (thankfully, not on Zoya’s head – but somewhere he must have wanted to). The director, Gul Khan had asked him to first pour the whole cup on the table and then clean it up frantically as his OCD would get the better of him. Now, while the scene was shot, Karan Singh Grover took tissues out of the box, however even as his hands moved to clean the table, he took a second to straighten the vase that was not placed perfectly (according to him) and then continued the task of cleaning the table. This is what makes Karan Singh Grover. Be the character.
On sets, we have seen the energy he puts in his scenes. Especially during action sequence. His adrenalin is at a high and interestingly he does not rest in between shots lest it drops and the scene has a mismatch of energy. We have not seen him feel the fatigue after shooting strenuous action sequences that requires him to jump over railings, do Parkour moves and climb stairs two at a time. These are just some of the things he can do. His flying roundhouse kick (Yes, he is trained in martial arts and it was he who supplied with the exact terminology) is something one needs to watch for real, in slow motion. He particularly loves action sequences.
When asked how he feels about romantic scenes, his reply is that they are toughest as to emote when there are people sitting right under your nose holding a thermocol sheet  would actually make one laugh. And to portray that the lady love is the only thing he can see in the whole wide world is something he has had to work at. Also when one is supposed to be deeply look into the eyes of the person you love, you are being told on a speaker by the director to give all sorts of expressions and that is not a cake walk.
We also asked how easy it is from him to switch off after a scene is done and he says, “I take longer to switch off than switch on. Once I am on the set and in the scene, I am the character but after doing an emotional scene, its takes a bit longer to switch off.”
Well, this is just the tip of the iceberg or shall we actually say, a trickle of the hot molten lava that is Karan Singh Grover. There is more that will come. Watch out for more from Forum32 on what makes Karan Singh Grover the man he is, the actor and of course the heart-throb. Till then enjoy him play the angry young man as Asad Ahmed Khan in Qubool Hai, Monday to Friday, at 9:30pm on Zee TV.

Interview of Karan Singh Grover on Sabras Radio with Raj Baddhan.

Interview of Karan Singh Grover on Sabras Radio with Raj Baddhan.

Raj: Thanks so much for taking the time out; I know you're in the middle of you shooting at the moment, thank you so much for taking out the time to be with us today
KSG: that's ok; I could do with a 15 minute break man.
Raj: how does it feel to be a part of Qubool Hai on zee tv?
KSG: Im very honoured, it's a great show, its very detailed, its very upmarket if I do say so myself and they give a lot of attention to all the small details which is something that I really like.

Tweets:
Raj: Are there any similarities between you and Asad, and how easy or hard is it to portray Asad's character in Qubool Hai?

KSG: there are not many similarities actually, because he's a very very proper guy. The only thing that is common is I don't like food on the bed, I like to eat at the table properly, but other than that he is a very serious person and I'm not at all. I mean, the fans would know, people who have been watching me for some time would know that. Its difficult for me to keep a straight face and not make jokes and not move my hands too much and slow down my movements completely, so its difficult but I'm getting there I think.
Raj: But is it challenging as an actor for you to portray something so different to your real life character?
KSG: Its extremely challenging, because he is also a very multi-layered person, there are so many layers in his personality because of whatever's happened in his past, to keep that on the fore-front at all times is a little challenging.

Raj: A favourite dialogue in Urdu from Qubool Hai?
KSG: oh Man, I have such a difficult time learning those lines and you want me to say them right now? (both are laughing) Ha to, I really like that line when I said ki 'Bohot hi badtehzeeb larkiya hai, inhe kepre pehene ki tameez nahi'
Raj: you enjoyed that did you?
KSG: Ya Ya
(both laughing)
KSG: good fun, I like telling people what to wear
(both laughing)
Raj: I love that
Raj: Have you got any regrets about not doing any previous show such as other drama serials that you may have not opted in for that are now running successfully on other channels?
KSG: (He didn't understand as the network was breaking so he repeated)
KSG: No, I have no regrets as such about any other show that I was supposed to do because I wasn't really suppose to do any other show except for Is Pyar Ko Kya Naam Do, that was on star plus but that's shut down as well and I think the break worked for me and I'm just really lucky man, I'm lucky that I got this role and the chance to work with four lions and I don't think there is any other show that I would be doing on television right now.

Raj: Karan, how do you interact with your fans, because you're not on any social networking sites, how do you see the response to your character and to how your acting abilities are liked by your fans?
KSG: I don't really see the response, my father is mostly in touch with most of the fans, and if the ratings are good and everyone is happy, I get to know somehow.
Raj: fan from Algeria, he is popular and his popularity has crossed here in Algeria as well.
KSG: That's awesome man, thank you so much.
Raj: what's the best thing about your character Asad?
KSG: he's a very sorted guy, he knows what he wants to do, he knows what he's doing, and he's done everything on his own, without any help from anyone else, so he's a self made man, I like that about him.
Raj: and away from Asad, what about your favourite cuisine, what does Karan like eating?
KSG: I like eating a lot of things that I can't really because of the fat content in them but I love pizzas and we don't have burger king here but if we did the triple whopper anytime.
Raj: You should come to London for that, we got loads of Burger Kings here for you.

KSG: I know man; soon, I hardly get time to go home.
Raj: Have you been to London before?
KSG: No I haven't
Raj: because of shooting commitments, you probably wont get time any time yet because of Qubool Hai
KSG: Not any time soon, maybe next year hopefully.
Raj: what's the worst part of acting? Is it the gruelling hours, the hours that you have to devote to shooting?
KSG: No, am actually ok with the hours, I'm an ex hotelier, we had 18 hour shifts anyway so its not a big thing, and I was carrying stuff and trays full of food and stuff like that so this is much easier than that.
Raj: did you have to do any research to play a muslim character?
KSG: I didn't really need any research, I lived in Saudi Arabia for about 12 years so I'm quite accustomed to everything Islam.
Raj: very good, ok.
Raj: what's the 1 thing you dislike or like about your profession?
KSG: there are pros and cons in everything, in our profession the only thing that, we don't really get any privacy, that can be a little frustrating sometimes but its understandable. And what I really like, now this is a complete opposite of what I've just said, is all the attention.
Raj: the Attention, from the fans yeah

KSG: yeah.
Raj: talking about privacy, personal question, what was your first reaction when you first laid eyes on Jen in kasauti?
KSG: ohh! You guys don't know this story, I really liked her that time and she didn't like me, so I never said anything, I've always liked her from a very long time.
Raj: so how did you pursue her, if you knew that she didn't like you
KSG: (cuts in) I didn't, see she didn't like me and we were just friends then, if she was upset about something she used to talk to me about it and I used to make her laugh because that's what I do wherever I go. So that was our friendship and then later things materialized and now were married, that's a good thing.
Raj: she hasn't got any regrets now has she?
KSG: She better not man!
Raj laughs
Raj: aw that's sweet, it's a sweet story that.
Raj: by the way, have you got any plans to become producer or director any time soon? with you being an actor

KSG: uh not producer, but I do like direction and I would want to pursue a career in that, but there's alooot of hard work and struggle that goes behind direction. I'm starting, lets see, its all just a thought yet.
Raj: In TV or films would you say?
KSG: Both
Raj: what do you usually do when you return home from work?
KSG: Playstation
Raj: Oh yes, yes.
KSG: ya, I mean you get a few hours, that's about it, sleep, then I waste some time playing and I don't ignore jenny, coz she plays with me so it's a good thing.
Raj: oh brilliant, does she
KSG: ya man.
Raj: what do you like playing on the Playstation? What's your favourite game?
KSG: Taken, Fight Night, street fighter. Burn Out,
Raj: it sounds like you quite an action kind of guy then, what about Jenny; does she enjoy the action side to you?

KSG: she does, she does really, and I didn't know this about her but she has an action side to her as well because she's pretty good at all the games, earlier I thought it was just beginners luck but she practices and she gets better.
Raj: I know you haven't got much time, just a few more questions.
Raj: Asad seems to be an avid reader, are you, do you like reading books yourself?
KSG: I do but, I don't really read a lot of fiction.
Raj: asad likes cricket, do you prefer basketball more like Armaan? Or something different?
KSG: I like basketball
Raj: are you not a cricket fan?
KSG: not really, ya I know, I'm an Indian and I'm not a cricket fan, I know, its bad (laughs) but I don't like cricket so much. I like basketball, I like volleyball
Raj: how is the experience of working in a family drama like qubool hai different from working in a youth show like DMG?
KSG: Its absolutely different, the set-up is completely different, the actors are obviously completely different, and just the whole story content probably is somewhere similar but the way your suppose to perform it is very different and its much heavier, the youth was easier to do.
Raj: And you say also that things have changed in terms of technology also since you finished dill mill gayye to Qubool Hai now, tims have changed a little but haven't they?
KSG: times have changed, we have new equipment, its much faster, we have two units running at the same time; all the time so, and it's a bigger channel as well. Zee TV is a much bigger channel than Star One was at that time which is now Life OK. So everything is different.
Raj: According to you, which scene or episode was your best performance as Armaan?
KSG: that's difficult, best one…
Raj: which one would you say stands out for you?

KSG: there's so many man, but if I had to say one, there was this, I don't remember the name or number of the episode, but its in Armaan;s room, where he brings Riddhima, Armaan is wearing a black shirt, Riddhima is wearing a yellow salwar kameez and he has pictures of her all over the room and he asks her to marry him.
Raj: aw sweet. Also, Karan, I don't know if you know, but you've been listed as Asia's 24th most sexiest man, how does that make you feel?
KSG: I know!  Its pretty good, jenny kicked my ass man, she's number 21.
Raj laughs
KSG: really, see what my life is like man, my wife's kicking my ass in every field, its not fun
Raj: and also beating you in Taken as well
KSG: yeah, exactly. She's Hot and she plays well.
Raj: what according to you is your biggest asset? Your physic, your voice, your eyes or something else?
KSG: what I feel is my biggest asset?
Raj: Yeah
KSG: I think just my honesty to the character, that's it. Everything else is ok.
Raj: what do you love most about Armaan and Asad? And how is life with wife Jenny?

KSG: Life with wife Jenny is Excellent! Better than I expected, thank you so much god. And what I love about Armaan the most; Armaan was very open about his emotions, he always said whatever he had to, which is a good thing, Asad doesn't; he keeps everything to himself which is his character and that's why he is they way he is, so that's the only thing.
Raj: do you know what, there's so many of your fans who want to see Dill Mill Gayye back, if that ever came back, would you ever do a season 2 for that?
KSG: Of course! Who else?
Raj: good, we all know you're a good chef so what was the first thing you made for Jenny and what was it?
KSG: oh, firstly correction; I'm not a very good chef; I am just a graduate from a hotel management institute, so it was mandatory for us to know how to cook. I don't enjoy it very much, and the first thing that I ever cooked for Jenny was, I don't know if you know what maggi is, do you know what maggi is?
Raj: no, what's that

KSG: its one of those microwave noodles.
Raj: oh ok, noodles in the microwave, ok, so do you cook regularly for jenny or is that something that you leave to her to do?
KSG: no I don't cook regularly at all, I would never do that.
Both laugh
KSG: she tried it for abit, she liked it but I think she's bored of it now.
Raj: yeah and you don't want to give her too much of a habit otherwise she'll expect it all the time
KSG: Exactly, see men understand this man .
Raj: I know, I know
Both laughing
KSG: don't give them too much coz then you get stuck.
Raj: your favourite gist that you have received from your wife Jenny?
KSG: she bought me the new Taken tag tournament CD, for Playstation so ya, that's the best latest thing.
Raj: are you happy with the current phase of your life or do you feel there is anything missing at the moment?
KSG: I wish I was shooting for a film as well. That's the only thing that's missing right now
Raj: are you talking to any film producers about making a bollywood debut?
KSG: uh no, I've already shot for a film and its already complete, and everything is done. Just waiting for the release, I don't know when that's going to happen so lets hope for the best
Raj: have you got a name for the film?
KSG: it's called Lorie, like a lullaby
Raj: oh ok, brilliant. And when can we expect that, some time next year?

QH - Written Update Dec 6 - Zoya leaves Asad's house

Qubool Hai

Written update

Ayan at home with the girls looking at the gifts haseena has sent for Nikhat, and the list that she demands from them.  Razia stops Rashid, who was going upstairs and enquires about the car. He tells her that he has already ordered for it and is expecting its delivery soon.  Meanwhile, Ayan takes Nikhat's dupatta and starts dancing to a song that Humaira plays on her mobile. While dancing, he accidentally collides with mamujaan who is very angry seeing his immature act.  He says sorry.  mamu doesnt say anything, just looks at Razia and asks about the engagement preparations.  she tells him that only the payment for the tent is remaining, rest everything is almost done. He leaves and razia follows.

Upstairs on the balcony, Razia is talking to mamujaan about humaira's impending marriage with ayan.  Mamu says that he doesnt like humaira's carefree nature even in the presence of males.  She says thats because Ayan and she are childhood friends therefore she is carefree with him.  she says that since they want humaira with them even after marriage, they have no other option but to marry her off with ayan.  He says that he has doubts about ayan's careless attitude and irresponsible behaviour which she puts to rest saying that once he is married then that would change. She asks his permission to talk to shirin for their marriage, and if possible get them married along with nikhat and imran. He agrees and leaves, while razia wonders that since rashid's mother is out of the house, this is the best time to finalise humaira's marriage before she can interfere.

At Asad's place at the main entrance, zoya tries to convince nazma that nothing would happen to them,as asad wont even know that they went to see the match.Meanwhile, inside asad is seething with anger remembering seeing nzma and zoya at the stadium. When they enter,he asks nazma where had they gone. while nazma stumbles for words, zoya covers up for her saying that they had gone shopping.when asked why they returned empty handed, she replies that they didnt like anything hence didnt buy.Asad asks them what had they gone to buy. She replies that they had gone for computer hardware shopping.Asad starts asking zoya questions regarding the prices of various items and in the wake asks her about Dhoni's score.she too accidentally blurts out the score and their gig is up in front of asad.

Asad reprimands them for being so callous and is angry at nazma for beginning to lie to him.He also tells zoya that in her company, nazma first started to lie, then cut her hair and now went to the match when he had so clearly said no.Also if she stays anymore with zoya, she would start lying shamelessly like zoya which she hasnt learned yet and if that is not a big thing for her, then he doesnt know what is.Zoya tries to calm her down saying that there were many other girls too, but asad counters comments that they must definitely be with their guardians and definitely were not dancing and prancing around like her.He further says that its not her fault, its her parents' fault who did not instill mannerisms in her when she was a child and due to their carelessness, she is so arrogant and high headed today. He also says that had dilshad not kept her in their house,he wouldnt have liked her staying one bit.Zoya tells him to directly say that he wants her to leave the house. He says that if thats what she wants and feels,he wouldnt stop her. Sensing his anger, nazma is unable to say anything.Zoya silently leaves, sobbing.

Ayan, his sisters and humaira have gathered in the storeroom for their last zongo hottie meeting before nikhat's marriage, razia discusses marriage proposal for ayan and humaira with shirin and rashid.

Ayan discusses the following day's agenda with the girls. Humaira says that they need to decide on the long list of functions ahead.sensing nikhat sad, they say that she doesnt need to be since imran too is now a member of the gang and they can come together after their marriage.Nuzrat enquires if this rule is applicable to everybody's else's life partners, that they become members of this gang by default.Nikhat says its not necessary since it might be possible that somebody's life partner is already a member of the gang.while humaira blushes at this, ayan determinedly says thats not possible since he doesnt intend to marry ever.

Shirin is very happy about razia's marriage proposal, rashid is concerned that they should know about ayan's wishes first.razia tries to convince him that the whole house almost pseudo already knows about them and that she doesnt think that would be an issue.shirin however assures rashid that she's sure that ayan would agree to the marriage.rashid asks her to discuss this with him later.razia is a little upset hearing that but doesnt say anything.

Razia finds shirin alone and brainwashes her that rashid wanted to end the discussion because she called ayan his sole son, when he clearly is not, for rashid.Shirin tries to clarify that if rashid has not been able to forget his children, then she cant blame him since he's their father after all.But razia casts a doubt in her mind, that as long as the attachment is to the kids, its fine, the minute it starts with their mother,it could pose a problem.shirin tells her that she has the fullest faith and knows that rashid would never do somthing like that.

Meanhwile rashid in his room, rememebers zoya's advice to send his friend the drama ticket. He takes the ticket out from the folder and thinks thaat the show is for the next evening and whether he should courier this ticket to dilshad or not.

Nazma and dilshad at home while talking to themselves, that dilshad would get zoya downstairs and get asad to apologize to her for his comments, approach zoya's room and are surpised to find that she's gone with her bags and suitcase.Dilshad is shocked to see that zoya has indeed left the house.

On a starnded street. Zoya is standing on a deserted road with tears in her eyes. the screen freezes on her face.

Precap: when zoya gets into a fight with some hooligans and they seem to overpower her, asad appears from nowhere and they both fight together against them.Zoya is surprised to see asad helping her.
